Accept What Life Brings You

I was re-reading through some of the comments I’ve gotten on past blogs, and a few of them stuck out to me on “Break Down the Barrier Between You and Your Creativity”Tobias said something that resonates with me, and I thought I’d reiterate its importance.  In reference to accepting what is so we don’t torture ourselves about what could be, he said, “if you allow yourself to be open, a completely unexpected solution might arrive out of left field, simply because you gave it space by letting go of what wasn’t working.”  Ahh…

This is key – keep an open mind to your creativity and to life in general.  I’m going to get a little personal for a minute.  I feel like I’m at somewhat of a turning point in my life… I’m making a lot of changes – good changes – and the future is uncertain.  That makes me nervous.  As you know, I am a huge proponent for personal responsibility, and with that, I want to take control of the successes and failures in my life.  But I am working on letting go of needing to be in control.  I am, of course, working toward the goals I have set for myself but am trying to allow space for unexpected solutions and changes in my plan that may ultimately be better than the plan I have set.

How many of you have set a timeline for your life at one point or another?  Ladies – don’t deny it.  We have all said at some time “I want to married by 27, start having kids by 30; I want two boys, two years apart and be able to retire by 55”.  Let go of the timeline!  Keep your goals in mind always, but allow life to happen too.  Do not fight the inevitable obstacles and alternatives life hands you – the unexpected is what makes life exciting!

When have you resisted life’s unexpected twists and turns?  How did it work out – who came out on top?  Do you have any suggestions or warnings about how to or not to allow space for change and letting go of what wasn’t working?

  1. Sam,
I really liked this article. I thought I’d lay down a comment so you’d know we are paying attention.

Some people like me would call this Divine Intervention. What has always bugged me is how we work for goals, that may not be in accordance with the divine plan for our lives, with the theory “If it is to be, it is up to me.” I have always had an issue with that saying. But I do feel strongly about doing what you can to make your goals reality. So how can Divine Intervention or God’s Plan for Us, and this “If It Is To Be” quote both be true? I don’t think they can. What I do know, is that I am inclined to help a band that is out there hustling because I know they will do their best with any opportunites that I can provide for them. If they are working a plan, even if it’s flawed, I will try to help. Maybe that’s what God does too?
Back to your blog. It really is awesome when something comes out of the blue and creates for us a better situation than what we could have achieved on our own. I had something like that happen to me in the working world 9 years ago and have been riding it ever since while I continue to try to make my personal music goals reality.
    Thanks for posting your thoughts.

    • Thanks for commenting, Britt! Yeah, I think the whole “everything happens for a reason” mentality is probably something that was made up by someone who was looking for answers to why his/her life wasn’t going “as planned”. But then again, I could argue, what is a “reason”? Everything in life that happens leads to other opportunities, so if that’s what “reason” means – opportunities possibly different than the ones you may have had if you had taken another path – then yes, everything happens for a reason.

I think it’s all about just trying to have a balance between control of your life and allowing unforeseen events to occur.

      Bien jugado, amigo!

  2. I think one of the greatest challenges in moving forward is in the letting go. My experience along the way has always revealed that when I hold on too tight to something, forcing it to stick, it ends up crumbling. When I’ve turned my attention away from those things I want the most, what usually happens is I end up with something completely unexpected and a million times sweeter.

    • Thanks for commenting! I know – letting go is so difficult! It’s so hard to find a balance between taking responsibility for your life & being a person of action and allowing life to happen (or being open to life happening in a way other than what we have planned).

I recently heard a quote that was something like “your thoughts today will shape your experience of future moments” (NOT the right phrase, but along the lines). I thought it was a great way to reiterate that we can control our outlook on life (or a certain situation), and the ways in which we look at life – be it negative or positive – will affect how we see our experiences.

Encourage yourself to find a meaningful lesson in every situation… it will make you a wiser, stronger person in the end.
